Aug 29 - Lonesome Valley
In the 1800s E. E. Jennings owned most of the area and was one of the businessmen who built
Lake Toxaway and the Toxaway Inn. Over the decades most of his land was sold off, but the
family retained the beautiful and dramatic Lonesome Valley for itself. Now that 800-acres is
being developed by Jennings' grandson Dick Jennings with the help of Brien Peterkin and
Thomas Bates, names familiar to many Lake Toxaway residents. An extensive network of
hiking trails has been built through the valley and we've been invited to come check them out.
Pack a lunch and at the end of this moderate hike, we'll stop to eat it at "the spa," a relaxing
area at the base of the rock face where a stream splashes through.
Aug 15 - Chimneytop Mountain
Strenuous (Details)
A rocky spire, like that of a chimney, dominates the High Hampton property. From its lofty
summit, Chimneytop offers a spectacular 360-degree view. After the descent we'll have lunch
at High Hampton Inn or Cornucopia.
Aug 1 - Snowbird Mountain
Moderate
Beth Townsend of Cashiers will help us explore the Snowbird Mountain area of Glenville.
Snowbird is an 1850 acre private community with 13 landowners. The only amenity in
Snowbird is the trail system, a portion of which crosses each owners’ individual property. The
land was used in the late 1800’-early 1900’s for cattle and cabbage farming, and was settled
by families such as the Keeners, Wades, Whitts, DuPrees etc. There are currently six
completed homes and four camp/destination structures at Snowbird. The hike will last about
two hours (plus driving time). Bring lunch.
Aug 22 - Rock Mountain
Moderate (Details)
This pretty, scenic loop trail will take us behind High Hampton where we can enjoy great views
from the top of Rock Mountain. Then, we'll descend through the forest and make our way
back to the Inn, passing the upper Zachary Cemetery and some homes in the High Hampton
Colony along the way.
